Speeches

Audio and video recordings of some of the speeches that have been made at IOF meetings can be downloaded below.

Naomi Klein

Naomi Klein speaks in London
Celebrated anti-corporate activist and writer, Naomi Klein, delivered a powerful speech against the occupation of Iraq to an audience of over one thousand in a rare appearance in Britain on 24th November 2004 (more info). The meeting, chaired by Jeremy Dear (NUJ), was jointly organised by Iraq Occupation Focus, Jubilee Iraq, Voices in the Wilderness UK and War on Want.
Naomi begins the speech by reflecting on Bush’s recent victory in the US presidential election and how this has given the administration an even greater sense of impunity (as witnessed in the latest assault on Fallujah). She also speaks of how the true horror of the occupation has been masked by the US media and of how the anti-war movement has so far failed to counter this effectively. She also describes how Iraq’s occupiers have from the outset betrayed their promises of freedom and democracy and have, instead, attempted to impose an apocalyptic vision of extreme neo-liberal restructuring.

End the Occupation: Why US–UK troops should leave Iraq now
Iraq Occupation Focus was launched at a well-attended public meeting at the Indian YMCA on 9th June 2004. The speeches from that meeting can be downloaded below (courtesy of Indymedia):

Jeremy Hardy

Jeremy Hardy uses humour to pour biting scorn on the arguments used by Bush and Blair to justify the invasion of Iraq and subsequent occupation, highlighting the hollowness of their claims about promoting human rights, fighting terrorism and combatting weapons of mass destruction. He also dwells on the rise of Islamophobia and connects the growth in support for the far right with the scare stories about terrorism put about by politicians and sections of the press.

Ewa Jasiewicz

Ewa Jasiewicz focuses on the attempts by the Coalition Provisional Authority to sell off the Iraqi economy to western companies, and of the struggle of independent Iraqi trade unionists in Basra against the right-wing economic policies of the occupying powers.

Tariq Ali

Tariq Ali puts the Iraqi resistance against the US–UK occupation in historical perspective, comparing it to other struggles against colonial powers, and insists that it has played a vital role in scuppering the plans of Iraq’s would-be rulers. He also issues an impassioned call for an organised solidarity movement in the UK and for a campaign to punish all MPs who voted for the war at the next election.
