Naomi Klein speaks in London
Celebrated anti-corporate activist and writer, Naomi Klein, delivered a powerful speech against the occupation of Iraq to an audience of over one thousand in a rare appearance in Britain on 24th November 2004 (more info). The meeting, chaired by Jeremy Dear (NUJ), was jointly organised by Iraq Occupation Focus, Jubilee Iraq, Voices in the Wilderness UK and War on Want.
Naomi begins the speech by reflecting on Bushs recent victory in the US presidential election and how this has given the administration an even greater sense of impunity (as witnessed in the latest assault on Fallujah). She also speaks of how the true horror of the occupation has been masked by the US media and of how the anti-war movement has so far failed to counter this effectively. She also describes how Iraqs occupiers have from the outset betrayed their promises of freedom and democracy and have, instead, attempted to impose an apocalyptic vision of extreme neo-liberal restructuring.
